Redundancies at Bolaños Mechanical Engineering as electricity contract is terminated 5th May 2021
Employees contracted at Bolaños Mechanical Engineering Company will be entering a consultation period after the company’s contract with the Gibraltar Electricity Authority was terminated.
The announcement was made yesterday as a spokesman for No.6 Convent Place explained that Gibraltar now has an independent source of power with the capacity and infrastructure at the new LNG Power Station.
Both the GEA and the Gibraltar Government displayed their commitment in supporting these employees affected by the termination of this contract, which ends on June 30.
Unite the Union said it had been informed of the termination of the contract and the redundancies and would work to mitigate the impact on Bolaños’ employees.

A heavy instruction manual caused a Gibraltar-wide power cut on Thursday morning after it was accidentally dropped on a control panel in the power station.
The weight of the manual landing on the instruments on the panel caused all electrical power to disconnect, the Gibraltar Electricity Authority said in a statement, as it apologised to customers for the hour-long outage.
It was “a simple human error” by an employee of a sub-contractor, the GEA said, adding it was investigating how the accident came to have such an impact in order to avoid a repetition in future.
Waterport Power Station is Decommissioned Published: 17 December 2020
HM Government of Gibraltar has announced that Waterport Power Station has now been formally decommissioned and will never again generate power for Gibraltar, as we move to our cleaner and more efficient energy production at the new LNG North Mole Power Station.
The construction of Waterport Power Station commenced in 1981 after contracts were exchanged between the then City Electrical Engineer Victor Bensadon and Hawker Siddeley Power Engineering for the installation of diesel engine powered generating sets with a total capacity of 15MWs, which was enough to meet Gibraltar’s power demand at the time. The power station produced its first kilowatt of power in August 1982 and has served our community for almost 40 years.
