I was too low on Meyer before the draft. I saw him up to 101 mph in his first start of the year when he threw a lot of well-located sliders in the 89-92 mph range and struck out several Oregon Ducks. But his stuff and command waned later in the outing, which gave me relief-risk concern, though I should have realized the context for the look (it was his first outing of the season) was likely at play. He proceeded to dismantle TCU (10 K in 5.2 IP), North Carolina (CG, 1 BB, 14 K), and Utah (8 IP, 15 K) in the following three weeks before the shutdown, mostly with the fastball/slider combo, though he did flash a good changeup on occasion, too. The former two-time Cy Young winner, after missing most of the past two seasons with injuries, is throwing a 30-pitch bullpen for teams Jan. 13 at Cressey Sports Performance in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
And the Detroit Tigers will be there to watch the 34-year-old s workout as due diligence, according to a source with knowledge of the team s plan. Also, they were one of about 20 teams to scout left-hander James Paxton s showcase before Christmas, the source said. Paxton, 32, reportedly reached 94 mph on his fastball.
This doesn t mean the Tigers are interested in Kluber or Paxton. Rather, they re monitoring each situation. The organization already signed right-hander Jose Urena and outfielder Robbie Grossman this offseason but could use another starting pitcher to help combat the expected inning limits.

Once the MLB wraps up and crowns the World Series winner, south of the American border winter leagues start to prepare for baseball in the off-season.
The reasons to play in the winter leagues vary a lot. You have players that just want to stay in shape and visit their homes, like a Vlad Guerrero Jr., and others that desperately try to showcase themselves to get back to an MLB organization somehow, like Neftalí Feliz. And then you have those that try to get in some competitive at bats to make up for a lost season, like Steven Souza Jr. or Nate Lowe.
