Bill requires Delaware schools to have Black history curriculum

Tariah Hyland learned about slavery and Black civil rights icons like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks during her 12 years in Delaware public schools.
“And then if we’re lucky, Malcolm X,’’ Hyland told WHYY News. “Even then we still aren’t really taught the truth about their work and what they fought for. It’s almost like watered down and diluted knowledge about these very powerful leaders.”
So Hyland, a senior at St. Georges Technical High School who co-founded the Delaware Black Student Coalition, jumped at the chance to help make Black history part of the mandatory curriculum in K-12 schools, rather than merely an afterthought or part of February’s Black History Month lessons. ....

The Rachael Ray Foundation Selects 27 High Schools to Receive ProStart Grow Grants
ProStart Grow Grants totaling $135,000 awarded to help deserving high schools improve their existing ProStart Programs.

WASHINGTON, April 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/  Twenty-seven high schools from across the country will receive special funding to upgrade and expand their ProStart programs thanks to $135,000 in grants from The Rachael Ray Foundation (RRF).
Through The Rachael Ray Foundation ProStart Grow Grants, the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) will provide 27 grants to ProStart schools that have demonstrated a strong need to engage and educate high school students interested in exploring restaurant and foodservice jobs and careers. ....

It’s been a tough year for lots of us. For students at the Choir School of Delaware, not being able to get together to sing has been especially difficult.
“COVID? It sucks,” said Arianna Walker, an eighth grader at Gateway Lab School in Wilmington.
She’s in her first year with the Choir School, a comprehensive after-school program that provides more than just a chance to sing. In addition to music lessons, students get help with school work and learn life skills from adult tutors and mentors. ....
