Native American painter Brent Learned merges his tribal culture with Pop art sensibilities Oklahoman A self-proclaimed mama s boy, Brent Learned was entering his senior year at the University of Kansas when he asked his mother what he could do to make her proud.  She goes, Well, son, I m already proud of you, but if you re asking to make me more proud, I would really appreciate it if you would paint your culture, said Learned, a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. So, I started doing Native American paintings, and then from there, I kind of discovered other Native American artists. . The way I look at it is I m telling my ancestors story . and I feel like I m keeping their voice alive through my art.

What I ve learned from rehearing music during COVID stay-at-home

“How to Listen,” the six-month weekly series that dived into so-called classical music, was not my idea. The suggestion that I rely on a lifetime of listening to guide readers who may be interested in expanding musical horizons through my selection of pieces seemed a reasonable enterprise, although I had no idea how I would go about it. I did, at first, resist titling it “How to Listen.” In the back of my mind was what Virgil Thomson liked to call the music appreciation racket. What I hadn’t counted on, however, was that the series would not be me telling you how to listen, but me finding out how to listen myself as I worked through 25 pieces that I figured I knew pretty well.

Larry Levey

Larry W. Levey, age 70, of Holland died Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at Holland Hospital. Larry attended Hope College and played on the Hope College basketball team. He was one of the founding agents at Woodland Commercial Real Estate in Holland. In 1991 an opportunity was presented to Larry and he moved to Santa Clarita, CA where he became Vice President of Sales within the aeronautical engineering industry. There he met Cacilda and they married. He retired and came back to Holland in 2015. Larry was asked to again become involved in commercial real estate and land development and became President and CEO of the Bay Trading Company. Larry’s passion was golfing and the Green Bay Packers.
