Fiji Police Force spokeswoman Savaira Tabua has called for members of the public to adhere to COVID-19 health and safety regulations.
The call follows an event yesterday where a crowd of people gathered at the Port Mua-i-walu jetty in Suva yesterday to collect personal cargo from two inter-island vessels.
“We are urging people to be responsible and not be lax about the safety measures as there is still a COVID-19 outbreak among us,” she said.
Goundar Shipping Services (GSS) managing director George Goundar said 80 per cent of cargo movement recorded was for the Lau Group alone during this pandemic.

May 17, 2021 03:01:31 PM Owner of Goundar Shipping, George Goundar claims their social media account was hacked and the notice posted about the closure of the business was fake. Speaking to FijiLive, Goundar said he or his management did not post any such notice on their Facebook page yesterday and his business was here to stay and to serve Fijians. Our account was hacked and this is not the first time it has happened. It is quite unfortunate and we have reported the matter. We have been affected by such kind of hacking before as well, he said. Goundar has assured patrons that their services will resume once the restrictions on travel are eased by the authorities.
May 16, 2021 07:59:27 PM Goundar Shipping has announced today that it has closed its businesses in Fiji, just ten years since its inception. This comes amidst a series of accusations of miscount and human trafficking directed at the company. Goundar Shipping Limited director George Goundar said it was time to close the business and put their vision of better shipping for Fiji on the shelf. “We would like to thank the people of Fiji for your ten years of support. We like to thank the many crews that build this company, some of you were like our own child,” Goundar said. “With the heavy heart, it’s time to say goodbye to all of you, some of you may not like the way we conducted our business and we apologise.
