Traverse City has lost a pillar in the community.
George Kuhn, Founder of the Traverse City Track Club, passed away Sunday night at the age of 88.
George founded the club back in 1962 with a small group of running enthusiasts.
It’s Michigan’s oldest and largest running club with membership of more than 900.
In the past several years, they’ve provided financial support totaling more than $2 million in the form of grants, scholarships and work group gifts for the community.
“As he went through his life, he was an inspiration to many people who became runners and they weren’t fast, they weren’t age group winners. They were just people who benefited from being able to be healthy,” said Lisa Taylor, Executive Director of TC Track Club.

Dr. George C. Kuhn, 93, of Wellsburg, WV, passed Friday, December 18, 2020 at home. Born January 30, 1927 in Van, WV to parents Aubrey and Electa (Price) Kuhn. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Oran, Emil, Clyde, Victor, Julian, Norman, Thirley Lambert, Nova Stewart, and Dorsey Stewart.
Following high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945, serving as Military Police in Germany during WWII and domestically at Fort Knox, KY. After discharge, he enrolled in undergraduate and dental studies at the University of Pittsburgh, gaining his Doctorate of Dental Science in 1957. He practiced dentistry privately in Pennsylvania and West Virginia for 30 plus years. He enjoyed classical music, history, and working with his hands.
