The collection honours the Prince’s links to Malta.   The three designs see the Duke of Edinburgh during different stages of his relationship with Malta. The first two feature the Prince and his wife, the then Princess Elizabeth at Villa Guardamangia, where he lived for two years while serving as a Royal Navy officer from 1949 to 1951.     On the third, he is seen on September 1964 celebrating Independence Day, whereby he handed over the formal independence documents to Malta’s prime minister, George Borg Olivier.

Maltapost issues stamps in memory of Prince Philip

A collection of new stamps in honour of Prince Philip’s links to Malta will be released on what would have been his 100th birthday tomorrow – June 10. Maltapost’s three designs show Britain’s Duke of Edinburgh, who died two months ago, during different stages of his relationship with the island. The first two stamps feature the duke and his wife, the then Princess Elizabeth, at Villa Guardamangia, where he lived for two years between 1949 and 1951 while serving as a Royal Navy officer. On the third, he is depicted at the Independence Day celebrations, where, in September 1964, he handed over the formal independence documents to Malta’s prime minister George Borg Olivier.

Is Malta able to govern itself? – Arthur Muscat

In colonial Malta, the award of a Rhodes scholarship to a hostile anti-British student was unlikely to happen. Dom Mintoff, on the basis of his suitability, was granted such a scholarship and proceeded successfully to Oxford, consolidating a strong affinity with the colonial masters. This pro-British sympathy of Mintoff was further nurtured through having an English wife. Does this imply that Mintoff’s British leanings came at the expense of his love for Malta? Of course not, it probably was much more of a personal conviction that the interests of the Maltese would best be served through having the island submit itself to total integration with Britain. It may be inferred that Mintoff considered tiny Malta unable to survive as an independent state and responsibly govern itself.

No need to wait for the pope – Chris Bonett

The pope did not come to Malta as planned and, due to COVID-19, there have been fewer dignitary visits over the past months. However, the investment in our country’s infrastructure has been ongoing. Maybe a teenager would ask what a state visit has to do with road works. But the older generations know that,  until some years ago, that would have been the reason for road works to take place in certain parts of the country. Nowadays, works on our infrastructure have been constant and not even a global pandemic stopped them. There is no denying that we are now seeing work being done on our roads like never before. This is a result of a rapid shift in mentality on how infrastructural projects are planned – a new progressive mindset that thinks ahead, in a long-term manner.
