BONAVENTURE, NY  Lawrence Gellert, a music collector who worked to introduce white audiences to a tradition of Black musical protest during the 1930s and 1940s, will be the subject of the Jandoli Institute’s next music and social justice online forum. Dr. Steven P. Bona Students Produce Special Report on President s Speech

BONAVENTURE, NY   Students in the university’s Jandoli School of Communication have produced a special report previewing President Joe Biden’s first address to Congress. The program, a collaboration of SBU-TV, the Jandoli Institute and TAPinto Greater Olean, can be viewed on the SBU-TV YouTube page. Jandoli School students Jaren Holmes and Julia Schneider hosted the show. Holmes and Schneider interviewed Mary Rose Kubal, chair of the university’s Political Science Department, and Richard Lee, an associate professor in the Jandoli School and executive director of the Jandoli Institute. Kubal and Lee discussed the topics the president is likely to address, as well as the role of speeches in American democracy.

Jandoli Institute introduces new project on speeches By Tucker Reilly, News Assignment Editor The Jandoli Institute, part of St. Bonaventure University’s Jandoli School of Communication, has begun a project on its website examining speeches. The project features analysis and suggestions from experts on the characteristics of a good speech. According to a press release from sbu.edu on March 31, the project will examine each of the 11 current contributors’ suggestions on a weekly basis, beginning this week. The suggestions given for the project come from a variety of sources – New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, New York State Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul and former U.S. Representative James T. Walsh are among the many notable names included.

Empower raises 22 million yards for cause By Cassidey Kavathas, News Editor The Yards for Yeardley event, presented by Empower Student Peer Prevention Educator Group in partnership with the One Love Foundation, held their award ceremony yesterday. The event was in memorial of Yeardley Love, who lost her life to relationship violence in 2010 as well as raising awareness of interpersonal or dating violence during sexual assault awareness month. Empower exceeded their goal of five million yards over four times, with their final count being around 22 million yards raised. “We [Empower] are elated with the results!” said Dr. Jennifer Eastman, the director of the Campus Program. “The number of participants is approximately 500, a huge increase from last year.”
