July 29, 1840: The Whig reported the following as a “Medical Notice.” “Dr. Patton has resumed the practice of medicine at Kingsport, Tennessee, and respectfully tenders his professional services, to his old friends and the public in general.” “He is associated with Dr. Wm. N. Vance, a graduate of one of the Philadelphia Colleges of Medicine. By prompt and diligent attention to the health of their patients, they hope to merit the confidence and patronage of the community.” The Whig was published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1840. July 29, 1896: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, according to the Herald and Tribune, “The Jonesboro Concert company of this place, which is spoken of in the most flattering terms by those who attended the concert given by it in Johnson City the 21st, will give a concert in Greeneville Thursday, August 6. We hope for them a good crowd, and feel sure all who attend will have no chance to regret

July 25, 1852: The New Orleans Weekly Delta reported, “The Jonesborough (Tenn.) Rail Road Journal relates the following as a specimen of the way they do things in Tennessee. ‘S. D. Adams has written a letter to Col. Roper, of Dandridge, Tennessee, notifying him that he will shortly publish his life, which will be illustrated with woodcuts, and will disgrace him and his children to the tenth generation.’ Col. Roper, in reply, says he will prove his calumnies to be false in every material part, and his reputation to be that of a common street liar, and further, that if he shall come in contact with him, he ‘will cowhide him in a manner commensurate with the spirit of his age. Cowhiding in accordance with the age is good!’”

July 24, 1904: J.H.C. Staples was fined $15 for selling soft drinks without first giving bond. July 24, 1911: The Wilmington Dispatch, a newspaper in Wilmington, North Carolina, carried information as a followup to a story initially reported on July 17, 1911 from The Minneapolis Morning Tribune. The article reported, “The latest developments on the ‘plague’ situation in Mitchell County are most encouraging and no fear is entertained as to the results of it. . In regard to Dr. Buchanan who it was reported was in a Johnson City hospital in search of cure for this disease, it is said that the report was incorrect. District Passenger Agent J.H. Wood, of the Southern Railway, has received the following telegram from Johnson City in regard to it: ‘There is no truth in the report that Dr. Buchanan or anyone else from Mitchell County has been confined in a Johnson City hospital . with an unknown disease. July 18, 1889: The Comet reported several interesting pieces of information about Johnson City area residents. “Mr. Ed Lynn is the new Secretary and Treasurer at the Johnson City Foundry and Machine Works.” “Mrs. Sam Simons and daughter, Lottie May, have returned from Cranberry. The child is improved in health.” “Gen. Wilder yesterday deeded the lot on which the new Baptist Church is built at Roan Mountain, and then gave ten dollars in cash.” “Mayor Ike T. Jobe calls the board together every few nights now and is settling down to work nicely. He presides with dignity and keeps both eyes open for Johnson City interests.”
