Tom Harrell
Tom Harrell has been an active musician for over 50 years. After stints with a wide range of prominent bands including those of Horace Silver, Lee Konitz and George Russell, he came to maturity with the Phil Woods Quintet from 1983 – 1989. For the past three decades he has released a series of discs on roughly an annual basis that are consistently well-received. In 2018 he was the Jazz Journalists Association Trumpeter of the Year. In this next hour of Jazz at 100 Today!, we will begin our series on trumpet masters with Tom Harrell.
In 2006, Harrell formed a quintet with Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Danny Grissett on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums. This durable unit recorded together until 2011, releasing five discs on HighNote. Of the third disc, 2010’s

The trio of Emerson, Lake & Palmer had played their first live gigs in late summer of 1970 (a breakout at the Isle Of Wight Festival) and while touring for the rest of that year, were putting some concepts together for their second album. Greg Lake didnât particularly like Keith Emersonâ idea for a long form concept for side one of the LP. He threatened to leave the group but finally was convinced to stay and write the lyrics which turned out to be a science-fiction themed 20 minute opus about a armadillio shaped tank and itâs battle with a manticore. Yeah, alot of pot smoked it would seem.

Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea emerged from the 60s among the best pianists of their generation. Recording steadily over the next five decades, they are iconic masters in many musical formats, particularly notable for their small ensemble work. As time has gone on, Jarrett has focussed on solo recordings and recordings in a trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, mostly live. While Corea records in a rich variety of settings, his best work is arguably in the intimate settings of duos and trios.
