Johnny Appleseed Festival ready for its return to downtown Leominster

Many civic organizations struggle to stay alive

LAGRANGE — Not all that many years ago, any motorists arriving in any number of small towns around northeast Indiana to communities such as LaGrange or Howe or Wolcottville, would have been greeted when they entered those towns by a welcome sign that included the names of most of the civic and fraternal organizations that also called that community home. From the Lions clubs to the Jaycees to Rotary, Kiwanis, Eagles, and Moose, many of those organizations once dominated the local philanthropic landscape. In the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, local social, civic and philanthropic organizations and clubs were at the heart of most communities, but many have disappeared, and most of those that remain are struggling to survive.

Village confirms dates for Johnny Appleseed Fest | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Writer The village of Lisbon is one step closer to welcoming back the Johnny Appleseed Festival after last year’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Village council on Tuesday voted unanimously to confirm the proposed dates of Sept. 18 and 19 by the Lisbon Area Chamber of Commerce for the festival. “It’ll be a welcome thing to downtown provided we can do it,” said council president Dawn Thomas. In a letter to Mayor Peter Wilson and village council, executive director of the Lisbon Area Chamber of Commerce Marilyn McCullough asked for permission to hold the event downtown as usual.
