Thursday is traditionally Souptown night for the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival, with most shows happening in Superior and a pre-game soup potluck with music, dubbed #SoupB4Sup at 2104. In a way, this year’s Thursday activities were more like a normal Homegrown than previous nights, with a small gathering of soup-eaters and livestreams at 2104 plus live, in person shows across the bridge at Earth Rider.
The live shows started earliest, with the Misisipi Mike Allstars kicking off night two of what Earth Rider is dubbing “Starfire’s Unofficial Birthday Bash” during Homegrown week. The crowd trickled in as the evening went on, with some light sprinkles that did nothing to chase away the good vibes.

In recent years the mid-point of the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival was dubbed “Westside Wednesday,” with music lovers fanning out to venues from Lincoln Park to West Duluth. This year, Soup Town night came early as Earth Rider Brewery in Superior kicked off their in-person series of shows dubbed “Starfire Unofficial Birthday Bash” that will continue through Saturday of Homegrown Week.

The evening’s festivities began at 5pm, with Black River Revue playing under Earthrider’s giant tent. Fans trickled onto the grounds throughout the evening, with a reasonably-sized crowd gathered by the time of Charlie Parr’s closing set. Whether inside the tent or outside on the grounds near one of the fires needed on a chilly May evening, fans still had space to spread out as needed. About this time every year, Kala Moria likes to create an extracurricular, Homegrown Music Festival-themed activity that runs adjacent to the annual showcase of local music, art and visuals.
One year she made Homegrown trading cards featuring musicians and other familiar faces from the scene. Players had eight rounds to build a dream musical lineup. Another year, the tuba player from the polka punk band Winzige Hosen assembled a marching band to play during the annual Homegrown kickball game.

Michael Culleton of Chatham was named to the Fall 2020 Presidential Honor List at New York Institute of Technology. To qualify for the Presidential Honor List, a student must achieve a minimum semester GPA of 3.7 and complete at least 12 credit hours without any incomplete grades.
Andrew Mitzak of Chatham was named to the dean s list for the 2020 fall semester at the University of Iowa. Mitzak is a student in the Iowa s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and is majoring in Pre-Medicine.
