Nashville police shooting: MNPD won t release full body camera footage

View Comments The Metro Nashville Police Department released partial footage the day after the shooting but denied an open records request for the full footage from the scene, saying the investigation was still open. In Tennessee, state law allows but does not require  law enforcement agencies to keep records confidential if they are related to an ongoing investigation. Body camera footage from previous police shootings was released while investigations were still active. Footage from a March shootout that left a woman dead and an officer wounded was released within a week. Footage from a non-fatal police shooting of a woman threatening suicide and wielding a pick ax in March was also released within a week.

(AP/WMOT)    Nashville Police are investigating the department’s fifth officer involved shooting of the year, after a Metro officer shot and killed a homeless man over the weekend.   MNPD spokesman Don Aaron said an officer shot 23-year-old Jacob Alexander Griffin at a homeless camp Saturday night. The department released body cam video of the incident Sunday. Griffin yelled at police to get off his property and refused to surrender his gun. The video includes audio from a 911 call made by Griffin’s mother. She told police her son was threatening mass violence. Police say Griffin shot at them twice before a SWAT officer returned fire.

The video included audio from an emergency call made by Griffin’s mother, who said her son was threatening mass violence. She said her son was angry about being fired from a local store six months ago. After several hours, as officers moved in planning to use police dogs and rubber bullets to take him into custody, Griffin fired a shot. Nashville SWAT Officer Matthew Grindstaff then shot Griffin, who was pronounced dead at a hospital. No officers were injured. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Nashville police are investigating the incident. Sign up for Daily Newsletters
