Ava DuVernay Adapting Wings of Fire for Netflix
Netflix has ordered
Wings of Fire, a family-targeted animated event series based on the best-selling book series, with Ava DuVernay on board the project.
The epic fantasy saga marks the first animated series from DuVernay and ARRAY Filmworks. DuVernay, author Tui T. Sutherland and Sam Register will executive produce the 10×40-minute series, with Dan Milano, Christa Starr and Justin Ridge serving as executive producers and showrunners of the new series from Warner Bros. Animation.
The
Wings of Fire books have 14 million copies in print around the world. In the story, a bitter war has raged for generations between the dragon tribes who inhabit the epic world of Pyrrhia. Tui T. Sutherland’s
Wings of Fire books are becoming a Netflix animated series, and Sutherland – who is set to executive produce the show – sounds understandably excited about it. “‘Will there ever be a TV show?’ has been the #1 question I’ve gotten at events almost from the beginning, and the answer is finally yes!” the author said in a statement, adding:
Not just “yes,” but “yes, AND I cannot believe the amazing team who are going to make this so great.” I am so immensely thrilled and grateful that Ava DuVernay is our Queen of Dragons (I’m pretty sure that’s the official title). On Tuesday (April 20), Netflix announced that it is teaming up with Ava DuVernay and Warner Bros., Animation on an animated series adaptation of
Wings of Fire.
Based on Tui T. Sutherland’s best selling book series of the same name, the
Wings of Fire fantasy novels take place in the fictional continents of Pyrrhia and Pantala both inhabited by dragons.
The streamer has ordered 10 40-minute episodes of the new animated series, which will center on a bitter war that had raged for generations between the dragon tribes who inhabit Pyrrhia.

Wings of Fire is set in Pyrrhia, a world ruled by dragons. They’ve adapted to every landscape: some breathe underwater, some breathe fire, some have poisonous tails. Humans in this world are mostly nuisances to dragons, fighting with the larger creatures over treasure. The first book in the series focuses on Clay, a sweet and loyal MudWing who, along with his friends, is prophesied to stop a war. The official show synopsis says:
