Cattlemen s Congress in Oklahoma City fills stock show gap

Candace Krebs Special to Ag Journal Though there were no iconic mountains in the background this year, multiple beef cattle breeds were able to come together and pull off a national show after the National Western Stock Show took a pause due to the viral pandemic. Making it happen was exceedingly valuable to exhibitors like 20-year-old Nicholas Imhoff, who started preparations for the show three years ago with the purchase of a straw of semen on his first visit to the National Western. The resulting bull, named “Locked In,” is now a coming 2-year-old and one of best in the Red Angus breed.

Agriculture news: Dietary guidelines get update

Candace Krebs Newly released dietary guidelines generate mixed reactions New five-year dietary guidelines, released in late December by USDA, brought strong approval from mainstream beef, dairy and grain organizations, but left other health advocates concerned. Updated every five years, the guidelines serve as the foundation for federal nutrition policy and shape the recommendations found on USDA s MyPlate graphic. Nina Teicholz, author and executive director of The Nutrition Coalition, said the new guidelines overlook the fact that 60 percent of the U.S. population already suffers from at least one chronic, diet-related condition. Ultimately, USDA rejected recommendations from an advisory committee made up of health and medical experts, which advised lower limits on alcohol and added sugars.
