Pressure mounts on MP Wright; PSOJ, JCC jointly call for resignation

George Wright The influential Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) and the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) have both called for the resignation of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Westmoreland, the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) George Wright. The call is relative to an incident in which a man, believed to have been Wright, was earlier this month caught on a video that has gone viral, beating a woman almost to a pulp with both his fists and a stool. Despite the legal/criminal proceedings being halted, both the JCC and the PSOJ are adamant that Wright is not of the calibre that belongs in the nation’s Parliament.

George Wright The due process argument appears to be wearing thin in the George Wright saga as four advocacy groups – The Jamaica Accountability Meter Portal, National Integrity Action, Jamaicans for Justice and Stand Up For Jamaica have joined the call for the resignation of the Member of Parliament for Central Westmoreland with immediate effect. The four have made the call based on several factors, including actions taken so far by the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) of which Wright is a member, circumstantial evidence and statements from the police. “For the last two weeks, Jamaicans at home and abroad have had to confront in their own minds the question of whether Wright was guilty of a violent and barbaric physical attack on a woman. Many have framed the argument solely around the CCTV footage of the altercation, which rendered both parties unidentifiable.
