EDITORIAL: Expanding wind power use needs careful look at suitability of site : The Asahi Shimbun

Windmills for power generation are lined up in Horonobe, Hokkaido Prefecture. (Asahi Shimbun file photo) The Environment Ministry has started discussions on a possible revision of its environmental impact assessment system for planned wind farms. The discussions started after administrative reform minister Taro Kono called for a deregulation of the system to help expand the use of renewable energy sources, which is a pillar of measures for fighting the climate crisis. Using more renewables, which involve no greenhouse gas emissions, is, in fact, key to realizing a carbon-free society. We are facing the test of how we can expand our fleet of renewable energy facilities while at the same time curbing their negative impacts on the environment and on wildlife.

Japan imports 1 million tons of America rice, every year. Forced under a WTO agreement. Japan does not release the rice onto the market and instead it sits in silos in Hokkaido. After two years, it sold for animal feed. It costs ¥150 million for the silo shortage.

Race for environment leadership in East Asia enough for green recovery?

Race for environment leadership in East Asia enough for green recovery? In the midst of darkness, a glimmer of hope seems to be emerging for the world this year. The question is whether Japan is really coming along for the journey. A green and just future for all, especially for the youth of today and tomorrow, is within Japan s grasp but will this unmissable moment for much needed change be fully realized? As COVID-19 continues, Japan s new administration is taking on the climate crisis by declaring a goal of carbon net zero by 2050. Along with neighbors China and South Korea, Japan s declaration of decarbonization means the race to net zero is on in East Asia. With U.S. President-elect Biden s 2050 decarbonization plan and the European Green Deal, over 50 percent of global GDP is now covered by net zero targets, so there is real momentum on the world stage.

Wind Power to the Rescue - Akihabara News

Wind Power to the Rescue Akihabara News (Tokyo) In Japanese history, kamikaze was the “divine wind” that protected Japan from Mongol invasions and inspired suicide attacks in the Pacific War. Now, as the country struggles to balance its energy needs with sustainability, it’s again hoping wind power will come to the rescue. Resource-poor Japan has to import most of its energy, but offshore wind is poised to become a significant component in a new energy mix. In October 2020, the Japanese government said it would reduce the country’s carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, and now it’s moving to set up coastal wind turbines to help meet that goal. Zero emissions wind power is seen as one component of the new net zero strategy.
