Japan s military is lagging in terms of its digitisation, but a smart base experiment could begin to turn the tide.
The Japanese MoD has started a practical experiment of a smart base, using the 5G network system in Chitose Air Base of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
UAVs and UGVs will guard the smart base, while security guards will have wearable cameras. Image data caught by the UAVs will be transmitted by 5G and analysed by AI. Information about fuel supply and spare parts requirements will also be transmitted through 5G and be analysed by AI for optimisation.

Gen. Kenneth S. Wilsbach, the U.S. Pacific Air Forces commander, held a teleconference June 4 discussing strategies to stabilize the Indo-Pacific region.
Strategies include the implementation of the Agile Combat Employment system and the Aegis ballistic missile defense system on Guam.
The conference was centered around the threats that the region faces. According to Wilsbach, the main entities that pose as threats are Russia, North Korea, and China. Chinese military capability has made significant improvements over the last several years, and one of those areas is in ballistic missiles, he said. We also have concerns about, for similar reasons, for Russia and North Korea because both of those countries have also had significant developments in their missile capabilities.
This exercise brings together service members from each nation’s military in a combined effort to enhance interoperability in pursuit of common regional security goals. Service members from participating units plan, coordinate and conduct operations over land and at sea.
The field training portion of the exercise begins at Kirishima maneuver area with a combat engineer subject matter expertise exchange, casualty evacuation and combat service support training, and simulated fire support coordination training between Japan Air Self Defense Forces and U.S. military personnel.
