NXT set a massive card for May 11. Nearly every NXT champion would compete against top competition that could truly put an end to their title run.
Mercedes Martinez has been waiting for an opportunity for months. The veteran returned to NXT with a purpose that could be fulfilled when she fought Raquel Gonzalez for the NXT Women s Championship.
Karrion Kross was not putting his title on the line, but he was glad to compete against Austin Theory. Feeling honestly disrespected by The Way, the NXT champion promised to hurt Theory while Johnny Gargano watched the carnage.
TakeOver: Vengeance Day on Feb. 14, Gargano was all business. This was Johnny TakeOver.
It had to be, because his protégé Austin Theory was kidnapped by Dexter Lumis on their way to the ring.
WHAT DID WE JUST WITNESS?!
Kushida, looking to win his first title in WWE since leaving New Japan in 2019 and moving his family to the States, was more than ready for all Gargano had to throw at him. It looked like Theory wouldn’t have made a difference even if he’d been there.
This was as thrilling a match as we expected. Gargano seemed poised to retain when he countered a Hoverboard Lock attempt on the turnbuckles into a twisting suplex off the second rope.

It’s the 33rd TakeOver and the brand has yet to put on a bad one. There’s little reason to think this will be the first, but there doesn’t seem to be a tremendous amount of buzz for Vengeance Day. Perhaps it’s because people don’t think the NXT or Women’s titles are likely to change hands. Or maybe it’s because 2/5 of the card features matches for future tag title shots.
Whatever the reason, or even if you’re already FREAKING PUMPED, I figured I’d offer a few things I’m excited for in each match. In addition to the usual Cliffs Notes version of the story behind all five bouts.

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic has taken over WWE NXT. This tournament is no longer just a single-gender tag team experience as the women will now compete at the same time as the men.
The January 20 edition of NXT included three big matches in the Dusty Classic. First, for the men, Johnny Gargano teamed up with Austin Theory. The two members of The Way would fight their recent rivals Kushida and Leon Ruff.
Lucha House Party also dropped by from Monday Night Raw to compete in the tournament. Gran Metalik and Lince Dorado hoped to win against the former NXT tag team champions Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner.
