But as a political scientist who has studied African American candidates seeking statewide offices like governor or U.S. senator, I know that Warnock’s real victories were as an African American candidate who had no previous elected experience and won a Senate seat, and he became the first African American to defeat a sitting senator or governor. Drew Kyndall Ross of Hackensack was glued to his television set late Tuesday and into Wednesday. He was tracking the tight U.S. Senate race and eventual victory for the Rev. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat who became Georgia s first Black senator. This was a big win that made me appreciate the strength of our democracy, an exuberant Ross, senior pastor at New Hope Baptist Church, said Wednesday morning.
