SUMMARY
John Newton was a Virginia native and a Union general during the American Civil War (1861–1865). Born in Norfolk, the son of a long-serving congressman, Newton graduated from West Point and served in the Army Corps of Engineers before commanding a brigade and then a division in the Army of the Potomac. After the disastrous Union defeat at Fredericksburg in December 1862, Newton and fellow general John Cochrane met with United States president Abraham Lincoln in a veiled attempt at seeing Ambrose E. Burnside removed from command. Lincoln did remove him, but Newton’s career suffered for his effort. Newton fought well during the Chancellorsville Campaign in May 1863, and after the death of John F. Reynolds on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, he took command of the First Corps. Within a year, however, he had been denied promotion, been sent west to participate in the Atlanta Campaign (1864), and eventually exiled to Florida. There, in March 1865, he was defeated in

Kentucky State Parks are preparing to open campgrounds across the state this month.
Campsites at 30 parks will be available beginning on March 12, Kentucky State Parks said in a statement on Monday. Guests will be required to adhere to restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, including wearing a mask and maintaining safe social distancing.
âOne of the most popular recreational activities at Kentucky State Parks every year is camping,â said Department of Parks Commissioner Russ Meyer. âOver the past year, our staff has been committed to making improvements at several campgrounds that we believe will improve our guestsâ overall camping experience.â
Camping season opens March 12 at 30 Kentucky State Parks featuring approximatively 2,300 campsites across the commonwealth.

Sewer and 50-amp electric upgrades have been completed at General Burnside and Lake Cumberland campgrounds. New ADA sites have also been added to the campgrounds. The campgrounds at John James Audubon State Park and Carr Creek State Park will remain closed for the 2021 season due to ongoing upgrades and repairs.
