Man donates hundreds of pounds of food to Salvation Army community news

Print Vista Community Clinic has been giving out fresh and boxed food to support the health of patients and community members in need through food distributions for more than a decade. Since the onset of the pandemic, food distribution has increased and is offered up to four times a week, based on need, thanks to a number of local groups and nonprofits ranging from Feeding San Diego, Poder Popular and Coastal along with grants to the clinic. Diapers are also currently available, in various sizes. Parents and guardians of babies and young children can request a box of diapers when they call to schedule their food pick-up. Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society virtual event to feature Latino historian Maria E Garcia

Print The Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society invites all to join them Thursday, Feb. 18 at 12 p.m. as they present a lunch-time virtual presentation by Latino historian Maria E. Garcia as she discusses La Colonia de Eden Gardens. Maria E. Garcia (Courtesy) Garcia is a retired school principal and has been an activist in the Chicano movement since 1968. She is the recipient of the 2015 SOHO Cultural Heritage Award for her “Neighborhood House” series about life in Logan Heights. She was inducted in the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2016 and has been honored by the San Diego Union-Tribune as a “Latino Champion.” Her current book, “We Made San Diego”, tells stories about Latinos who contributed to the history of San Diego, including community activists who have worked to effect social issues.

Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society to hold food drive for local families Dec 19

On Saturday, Dec. 19 the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society will sponsor a food drive to benefit Solana Beach families that have been economically devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many in the community have lost their jobs or have had their work hours shortened and need the help of the community to get by. Members of the board of the Civic and Historical Society will be in the La Colonia parking lot at 715 Valley Avenue from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19. People will be able to drive through the parking lot and leave their donations with the Historical Society. The food collected will be given to the La Colonia Community Foundation which will give out the food on Sunday, Dec. 20.
