Government officials and ICBC blame B.C.’s legal profession for the Crown corporation’s escalating costs and annual deficits. The government says it needed to make changes that essentially remove lawyers and the courts from the dispute-settlement process for drivers injured in car crashes. But lawyers and insurance-industry advocates argue that those changes will reduce policy-holders’ rights and unfairly strengthen ICBC’s monopoly over B.C.’s auto insurance market. Enhanced care B.C. Attorney General David Eby announced ICBC’s switch to enhanced care in February 2020, outlining a plan to cut $1.5 billion in costs (mostly legal fees for defending the government against lawsuits from injured motorists seeking greater compensation).

Suspension of limitation periods ends March 25
A temporary suspension of limitation periods to commence court proceedings in British Columbia will end March 25.
On Dec. 22, 2020, the province announced a fixed March 25, 2021, end date for the suspension period, providing certainty and advance notice for lawyers and litigants to prepare to commence actions and appeals. People were encouraged to act early, rather than waiting until the end date of their limitation periods, a Ministry of Attorney General media release said.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, limitation periods for commencing a new civil or family action or appeal were suspended on March 26, 2020. Since then, the justice system has adapted its operations. The decision to end the suspension was made following extensive consultations with the judiciary, as well as the Law Society of British Columbia, the British Columbia branch of the Canadian Bar Association and the Trial Lawyers Association of Bri
