DeSoto, Caddo school employees in line for COVID-19 supplemental pay

DeSoto and Caddo school employees are line to get an extra paycheck in appreciation of their work during the COVID-19 pandemic. The DeSoto Parish School Board will vote tonight on a recommendation from Superintendent Clay Corley to pay all employees $1,500. The Budget and Finance Committee signed off on the plan last week. The supplement will cost the district about $1.5 million, with the funds coming out of the current budget. The checks will be cut March 25 if approved. Caddo Parish School Board members will consider a proposal at its March 23 meeting to give a one-time supplement of $1,000 to all full-time employees who worked 90 percent of their required days. Employees would get the money in June as a separate check.

Parishes make plans to vaccinate teachers, school staff

BOSSIER CITY, La. Starting Monday, Feb. 8, more people will be eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine in Louisiana, including people older than 65. But Gov. John Bel Edwards is already talking about the next phase of the vaccine rollout: prioritizing teachers. We do want to get our teachers vaccinated as soon as we can, said Gov. Edwards during his Thursday briefing. They are the next order of priority. Though he did not specify a date to begin vaccinating educators, the governor s announcement is welcome news to teachers throughout Louisiana. Parishes have been making plans for weeks, since teachers around the nation have been asking to get vaccinated.
