DBEDT NEWS RELEASE: DBEDT BOLSTERS HAWAI‘I’S DEFENSE ECONOMY WITH NEW PROJECTS

HONOLULU – The State of Hawai‘i’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) is pleased to announce three new projects that will focus on strengthening and growing Hawai‘i’s second largest economic driver – the defense sector. DBEDT has initiated contracts with the Military Affairs Council (MAC) of the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii and local tech company Referentia, through a grant by the Department of Defense (DoD) Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation for Phase III of its Hawaii Defense Economy (HDE) project. DBEDT also contracted CyberHawaii to support local companies with cybersecurity resilience.

The United States suffered 65,000 ransomware attacks last year â or over seven an hour. And it will likely get worse.
What was previously seen as a nuisance is fast becoming a national security problem as cybercriminals target key parts of the country s infrastructure. A recent attack on Colonial Pipeline sparked panic buying that emptied many gas stations across the Southeast, while another attack on JBS raised fears about the domestic beef supply.
