Abbott to give senior saxophone recital Special to the Kansan Bethel College student Caleb Abbott will give his senior saxophone recital at 7 p.m. April 24 at 7 in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center on campus. Abbott, Wichita, is a student of Joel Boettger, Bethel College instructor of saxophone. Abbott is scheduled to graduate from Bethel May 16 with a degree in music performance. In his recital, he will offer a selection of classical and jazz pieces by Alexander Glazunov, Victor Morosco, Wayne Shorter and Guy Wood & Robert Mellin, as well as an original composition. His piano accompanist is Christina Liu, D.M.A., Bethel assistant professor of music.

Four students nominated for Barry M Goldwater Scholarships

Mon, 03/15/2021 LAWRENCE Four University of Kansas students who have been actively involved in undergraduate research during their university careers are competing for Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships, regarded as the premier undergraduate award to encourage excellence in science, engineering and mathematics. The students’ applications are coordinated by the Office of Fellowships in Undergraduate Studies.  KU’s nominees: Emma Cosner, a junior majoring in chemistry and minoring in physics  Mary Sevart, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering  Jonah Stiel, a junior majoring in chemistry.  Sixty-eight KU students have received Goldwater scholarships since they first were awarded in 1989. Congress established the program in 1986 in tribute to the retired U.S. senator from Arizona and to ensure a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

Kansas health officials identify more COVID-19 clusters in Wichita area. Here s where Jason Tidd, The Wichita Eagle Dec. 17 State and local health officials Wednesday identified more coronavirus clusters in the Wichita area. The Sedgwick County Health Department reported a new COVID-19 outbreak at the Sedgwick County Detention Center, where 13 inmates have tested positive in the most recent outbreak. . The jail previously had at least 900 cases in a cluster that peaked in August. The Sedgwick County Work Release has a new cluster with fewer than five cases, all of which are residents. The county previously reported a cluster at the facility. It had seven cases as of Oct. 16, at which point it was still an active outbreak.
