IT IS significant and humbling to have a Maersk ship named after a place, a vanua of Fiji, says Bernard Hong Tiy, managing director of Maersk agent, Shipping Services (Fiji) Pte Ltd.
Mr Hong Tiy made the statement after the arrival of the 2546 container capacity vessel, the MV Maersk Nadi as part of her maiden call into the Port of Suva on Thursday morning.
In a statement, the company said the arrival of a Maersk container ship named after the jet-set town and vanua of Nadi, hoped to signify optimism in the resurgence of the tourism industry and the economy as the mass COVID-19 vaccination program gathered momentum.

Represented in Fiji by Shipping Services (Fiji) Pte Ltd, Maersk will operate two 2500 twenty-foot container capacity vessels between Suva, Lautoka and Auckland, Tauranga, Nelson, Timaru and Lyttleton in New Zealand. The service, named the Sirius Star Service is named after the twin stars Sirius, which passes over the Fiji group each evening. The first of the two vessels, the Seaspan Hannover made her inaugural call of the service into Suva on Wednesday.

THE return of one of the world’s largest integrated logistics company, Maersk, to Fiji is expected to not only ship more cargo to and from Fiji but also increase competition in the market.
A statement from Shipping Services Fiji Ltd yesterday said after a gap of seven years, Maersk was making a significant return to operate their own vessels in Fiji by committing two relatively large feeder vessels to service Suva and Lautoka, geared toward a fixed-day-call service.

After a lapse of 7 years, Maersk the world’s largest integrated logistics company is resuming operations in Fiji.
The Company has committed two relatively large feeder vessels to service Suva and Lautoka.
Represented by Shipping Services (Fiji) Pte Ltd, Maersk will operate two 2500 twenty-foot container capacity vessels between Suva, Lautoka and Auckland, Tauranga, Nelson, Timaru and Lyttleton in New Zealand.

Fiji Ports Chief Executive, Hasthika Dela hopes that Maersk will not only ship more cargo to and from Fiji but also increase competition in the market.
