This Swedish settler (aka Thure Kumlien) was an ornithologist, botanist and naturalist who settled near Lake Koshkonong in 1843. He sent bird specimens to all the major museums and was the first curator of the new Milwaukee Public Museum. Kumlien deserves more recognition and Milwaukee writer Martha Bergland s new biography from the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, The Birdman of Koshkonong: The Life of Naturalist Thure Kumlien, will uncover his contributions to ornithology. On February 17 Michael Stevens discusses his book  From the mid-1830s through the 1850s, more than a half million people settled in Wisconsin. While traveling in ships and wagons, establishing homes, and forming new communities, these men, women, and children recorded their experiences in letters, diaries, and newspaper articles. In their own words, they revealed their fears, joys, frustrations, and hopes for like in this new place. Woven together with context provided by historian Michael E. Stevens, these first person accounts form a fascinating narrative that deepens our ability to understand and empathize with Wisconsin s early pioneers.

Wisconsin Riffs: Jazz Profiles from the Heartland (Wisconsin Historical Society Press, 2018) builds a history of the genre in the Badger State through essays on its players. From legends such as Woody Herman and Les Paul, Dietrich brings the story right up to the current day with performers such as Hanah Jon Taylor and Nick Moran, who you can see and hear play in local clubs (well, once we are all back at live shows). A player himself in Wisconsin since the 1970s, Dietrich shares his unique insight on a genre and musicians often overlooked in the state s musical history. He ll discuss the book during the next WHS Book Bites livestream, on Facebook.
