NIWA air quality scientist Dr Ian Longley said air pollution caused by woodburners was among the worst kind. He said all the towns that have this significant winter time air pollution problem have substantial levels of solid fuel heating in homes. “The smoke that s generated pretty much just settles there for several hours and accumulates.” He said this form of air pollution from solid fuel burners was particularly damaging and resulted in more doctors visits for these conditions when levels were high. It also heightened population risk for heart disease, strokes, and with high exposure can cause reduced lung development in children.
