Kildare locals have expressed their concerns about littering and traffic on the Curragh, as well as traffic and damage to grasslands by vehicles and animals. They are also worried about the condition of buildings and infrastructure on the historic plains.
Almost 3,700 people recently made submissions to the public consultation on the future of the Curragh, according to Senator Fiona O Loughlin. Responses to the consultation will help develop policies on its future management.
According to Sen O Loughlin, a lack of facilities was also raised as a big issue, particularly in terms of parking, seating and bins. The management of the plains was criticised generally, in terms of litter and upkeep, and also in terms of the lack of enforcement and issues over user conflict.

Motorists in Laois are being asked to remain patient as the gradual reopening of some road safety services provided by the Road Safety Authority and the driving instruction industry, according to Laois Kildare Senator Fiona O’Loughlin.
More than 1,500 people are waiting to sit a test in Laois as Covid-19 restrictions froze the system.
She said the government has decided that initial Basic Training (IBT), the programme of mandatory lessons that all learner motorcyclists must complete with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) before sitting a driving test, can resume from 10 May. The RSA will continue to deliver motorcycle testing.

The Government is being urged to urgently protect community post offices in the wake of further warnings from the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU) that more closures are inevitable in Laois unless state intervention is put in place.
Senator Fiona O’Loughlin of Fianna Fáil has committed to working in Leinster House to ensure that Laois keeps its 14 remaining post offices.
“The post office is considered to be at the heart of local communities both rural and urban providing vital services to its customers,” she said.
“I will raise concerns over the threat of more post office closures in Laois. Our Post Office network must be valued for the role it plays in Irish life and the essential service it provides. The services are vital to rural towns and to people living in rural areas,” said the former TD for South Kildare which now takes in Portarlington and other parts of Laois and Offaly.
