School service group helping older adults Pacific Ridge’s upper-school service learning group WIND usually focuses on international disaster relief. During the COVID-19 pandemic, WIND began a fundraising drive called “ACT Now.” The drive supports Serving Seniors, an agency that provides daily support, including meals, health service and housing access, to more than 8,000 older adults throughout San Diego County. The pandemic has increased the number of seniors served by 44 percent in 2020, while the number of meals provided increased by 240 percent (for a total of nearly 1 million meals delivered). WIND is working to collect donations for Serving Seniors with the help of fellow school service learning groups Hands of Peace, Global Vantage and Revere. Column: In the darkness of the pandemic, Words Alive keeps the literacy light burning

Print As the executive director of Words Alive, Rachael Orose knows the power of a great story. But she didn’t expect to be living in one right now. When the pandemic shutdown hit San Diego in mid-March, pretty much everything the local literacy organization was doing to get books and reading help to at-risk and low-income communities had to change. And quickly. Its long-running Read Aloud program, which had volunteers reading books to more than 4,000 children at early-childhood programs and Title 1 elementary school sites every week, moved online. So did its outreach programs for teens. And its training of new volunteers and community partners. And its classroom support for teachers.
