Before film director Darius Marder left the 2018 meeting, he offered some parting instructions for Lisa Lobel, the casting director he had just hired for his film, Sound of Metal.
“As he was walking out, he said, I just want to let you know that most of the people you are going to be casting for are deaf, ” Lobel recalled in a phone interview Thursday.
“No problem,” she responded. After the director left the room, however, Lobel privately wondered how she would do it.
