On the evening of 23 October 1986, a prison riot broke out at the Metropolitan Remand Centre at Long Bay Gaol.  Three prison officers were taken hostage by inmates armed with makeshift weapons and, despite attempts by the officers to negotiate with the prisoners, they were locked in a nearby cell.  Seventy inmates then took control of a section of the Centre.

Blackburn man denies killing two of his own children A 29-year-old man has denied killing two of his own children and attempting to murder a third child. Jordan Monaghan, of Belgrave Close, Blackburn, appeared in front of Judge Robert Altham via video link on Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty to murdering his three-week-old daughter Ruby and 21-month-old son Logan. He also denied two counts of attempted murder of a third child, who cannot be named for legal reasons. Monaghan will stand trial at Preston Crown Court on October 4 this year, where proceedings are expected to take around 10 weeks. He is also charged with murdering his ex-partner Evie Adams, but did not enter pleas during today’s hearing.
