Disabled Man Kicked Off Southwest Flight Over Mask Despite Doctor s Notes

A family from Ohio have been left disheartened, embarrassed and disappointed after their disabled son was kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight for not wearing a mask despite having two doctor s notes explaining his health exemption.
Cheri Fleming and her son Bryan Crislip were trying to travel with one of her friends from Chicago Midway to Los Angeles on Monday when Southwest staff barred them from taking the flight.
Crislip, 22, has been vaccinated against COVID-19 and two doctors have given him an exemption from wearing a face mask for medical reasons, his mother said.
The Santa Clarita Valley business community gathered virtually recently to celebrate the SCV Chamber of Commerce’s 98th annual Virtual Awards & Installation.
“Even though 2020 was a roller coaster of a year, and we still can’t yet be together in person, we felt it was more important than ever to ensure we’re all here together this evening to honor our business community as a whole,” John Musella, chamber spokesman, said as he introduced the live-streamed program.
Guests were able to do just that as they joined the chamber for a virtual cocktail hour, with the opportunity to use a chat feature to connect with other attendees during the program.
The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce on Monday announced its 2020 Business Choice Award honorees and nominees, to be honored at the 98th Annual Virtual Awards & Installation on Thursday, January 28.
Monday’s announcement includes the 2020 Business Choice Awards and Pandemic Leadership Nominees as well as the recipients for the Public Service Award and Non-Profit of the Year.
The SCV Chamber has also created a new Cheri Fleming Heart of the Community Award which will be awarded posthumously to Cheri Fleming and presented to Don Fleming.
“We received hundreds of nominations this year from businesses across the Santa Clarita Valley and couldn’t be prouder of the stories of success, perseverance and change that have been shared with us,” said John Vance, chair of the SCV Chamber Board. “We truly believe this year’s top nominees are an outstanding representation of the resilience of our business community during the pandemic.”

“The final nominees this year give true representation for the 2020 business community and deserve to be honored,” stated Ivan Volschenk, Managing Partner at Evolve Business Strategies which manages the Chamber. “It is important for the Chamber to recognize the efforts of businesses during this unprecedented time, we believe this year’s nominees are great examples of what our community stands for.”
This year, attendees have the option to purchase a VIP ticket, which will include a unique three-course dinner and cocktail specially crafted by last year’s Entrepreneurial Spirit Award honoree,

“I think very few true volunteers are looking for recognition for their efforts. Being able to volunteer is a great gift in itself,” Cheri said at the time. “I always feel that I’m receiving so much more than I’m giving. However, to be a Woman of the Year in Santa Clarita is an amazing honor.”
In 2012, Cheri was named the “Woman of the Year” by the Los Angeles County 5th Supervisorial District and Commision for Women, and in 2017 she was named the “Volunteer of the Year” by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal.
Then, in 2019, both Cheri and Don were named the recipients of the “Silver Spur” community service award by College of the Canyons for their involvement in higher education.
