Janet Wray thought she was a pretty savvy consumer. She even has a son-in-law with a law enforcement background, and her daughter had an investigative-type job with state government.
But the Bolivar resident, 86, got scammed anyway and is now sharing her story in hopes that others won t go through her experience, which ultimately left her with $14,500 in losses far higher than victims median scam loss of $115 in 2020, according to the Better Business Bureau.
It started with a strange phone call on the afternoon of Halloween last year, Wray said. An unknown out-of-town number came up on Wray s caller ID, and Wray answered the phone because she had been expecting a call from her daughter, who was traveling that weekend. But the caller wasn t her daughter. The person falsely said they were with Apple, the maker of devices like iPhones, and that Wray s iCloud data storage plan with the company had been compromised.
