Central Illinois’s newest lawmaker didn’t waste any time making headlines.
State Senator Sally Turner was sworn in this past weekend, taking over the seat that had been held by her fellow Republican, Bill Brady. In the interest of disclosure, I should note that Sen. Turner is now my state senator, but I didn’t vote for her. Neither did anyone else – the hot new trend in the General Assembly is for lawmakers to resign days or weeks after the last election, allowing an appointed successor to get his or her feet wet and build up some incumbency without that pesky business of election.

Bill Brady s former Illinois Senate seat now belongs to a former Logan County clerk.
After a decision process stretching through most of January, five Republican Party county chairs chose Sally Turner of Beason to represent the 44th District for the next two years. The decision was unanimous.
WGLT and WCBU spoke with Turner about her experience throughout the appointment process.
How are you feeling at this point?
All the phone calls and texts and messages and the emails, that s overwhelming. I guess I really didn t think about that part. Another thing I am very appreciative of is the outreach by the fellow senators has been phenomenal. It made me feel so welcome, and I really appreciated that too.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Illinois Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady announced he will step down at the end of New Year s Eve.Â
Brady made the announcement in a Thursday tweet. He said his resignation will be effective at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31.Â
Brady talked in a public letter attached to the tweet about how proud he is of contributions he made to Illinois and its citizens. A reason for his resignation was not given in the tweet. I am proud of the work I have done throughout my career in the Illinois legislature, both in the Illinois House and the Senate, and am most proud of my tenure leading the Illinois Senate Republican Caucus over the last three-and-a-half years, Brady said. Over the years, our caucus was successful in securing additional funding for our public schools, helping create a tax-credit private school scholarship program for low and middle-income students, standing up against income tax hikes that hurt working families, and working tirelessly to impro
