Bill to solidify use of neighborhood electric vehicles becomes law

Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) announced that the Governor has signed her Senate Bill 214 to permanently grant the County of Orange the authority to establish a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) transportation plan in Rancho Mission Viejo. “The signing of SB 214 will further encourage the use of NEVs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Senator Bates. “NEVs are a viable alternative to automobile travel in communities like Rancho Mission Viejo and I am pleased that the Governor agrees.” Rancho Mission Viejo is a long-time master planned sustainable community development and its residents are able to access work, shopping, dining and recreation opportunities using one of the state’s largest NEV transportation plans. NEVs are electric-powered vehicles, similar to a golf cart, designed for low-speed neighborhood use that can travel up to 25 mph. The vehicles provide an alternative to automobile travel within the community to reduce emissions and save energy.

Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) has co-signed a letter to Governor Newsom and legislative leaders requesting they enact a “Gas Tax Holiday,” which would provide tax relief to Californians as gas prices continue to rise. A holiday would be a full moratorium on California’s gas excise tax collection, backfilled with state general fund dollars for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
