A young man eager to make his mark on the Senate Foreign Relation Committee dug into the wizened Israeli prime minister in 1982, flaunting talking points about the Arab-Israeli conflict likely crafted by a special interest group with an axe to grind against the region’s only democracy.
Calmly, but resolutely, Menachim Begin told the impetuous Sen. Joe Biden that Israel maintains its right to defend itself, and if necessary, he and his committee could keep their money.
If you watch footage of the encounter, you can see Biden’s face fall as he realized he over-stepped.

It has been a few months in coming, but the U.S. Senate is about to debate comprehensive legislation on how to respond to China. It’s a welcome development – as long as it’s really about strategic competition, and not a package of mostly unrelated government giveaways. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) offered no assurances this afternoon when he laid out a brief argument for the package on the Senate floor. He almost forgot to mention China!

HANOVER Policymakers looking to combat climate change should turn their attention to “smaller” solutions that, when scaled up, could make a big difference in lowering our reliance on fossil fuels, U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said Monday.
When people think of energy, she said, minds often turn to big public works efforts, such as hydroelectric dams, nuclear power plants and off-shore wind farms.
“But a bunch of what we can do both at home and overseas is really smaller initiatives,” the three-term senator said while speaking at an energy conference sponsored by Dartmouth College. “It’s what each of us can do as we think about energy use in our homes. It’s about efficiency.”
