COVID-19 case number continues to rise in Windsor-Essex, more deaths reported

Snapshot of the pandemic in Windsor-Essex Overall, 151 people in the region have died from COVID-19. There have been 8,300 cases of COVID-19 recorded in the region, 2,416 of which remain active.  Three are close contacts of confirmed cases and two are community acquired and 192 cases ares still being investigated. There are 103 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the region, according to the health unit, 18 of which are in the ICU. There is one school outbreak at St. Rose Catholic Elementary School. Three hospital outbreaks are also ongoing. One is at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare and the others are on two different floors at Windsor Regional Hospital s Met campus.

8 New Deaths, 272 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has announced 272 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday, bringing the local total to 7,646. Cases increased from 7,374 on Wednesday December 30th to 7,646 on Thursday December 31st and 1,933 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex. Thursday’s 272 new cases is the highest single-day increase in cases in Windsor Essex. They say 5,576 people locally have recovered (an increase of 145 recoveries today). There have been eight new deaths from COVID-19 as of Thursday bringing the local death toll to 137.  The Health Unit says:

The source of the vast majority of the new cases announced Thursday are under investigation, while 46 are connected to outbreaks, three are close contacts of confirmed cases. There are 100 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the region, according to the health unit. Though students are on holiday break, outbreaks are active at three schools, including St. Rose Catholic Elementary School, Immaculate Conception Catholic School and St. Mary French Immersion Catholic Elementary School. 

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine coming to Windsor-Essex seniors homes

COVID-19 vaccinations in the region started last week at the St. Clair College Sportsplex, with the Pfizer-BioNtech shot available to seniors home staff only. The Moderna product doesn t need to be stored at as low of a temperature. It can be taken to seniors  facilities directly, Ahmed explained. Vaccination is voluntary for residents, and a second dose is required at a later date.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has announced 163 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday, bringing the local total to 7,374. Cases increased from 7,211 on Tuesday December 29th to 7,374 on Wednesday December 30th and 1,814 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex. The Health Unit says 34 cases are outbreak-related, 2 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, and 125 cases are still being investigated.
