The stigma that comes with a criminal record has lasting effects. Unfortunately, people still shun these so-called black sheep of society.
Despite that, a number of ex-convicts have decided to bravely press on to make something for themselves after doing time and some of them have delved into the F&B scene to do so.
If you want to support and give them a second chance, you can consider patronising these eateries that have been opened by ex-offenders the next time you dine out.

Singaporeans love queuing, especially for things that are famous or highly raved about. So if an eatery wins the Michelin Bib Gourmand title, you can expect throngs of Singaporeans to form snaking queues outside the store soon after.
For the uninitiated, the Michelin Bib Gourmand is an award given to restaurants and street food establishments that offer diners very good value for money, with a complete and high quality menu priced at a maximum of SG$45 , as stated in the Michelin Guide. It is not to be confused with the Michelin Star or Michelin Recommendations.
As a self-proclaimed foodie, I don t mind waiting in an arduously long queue just to eat at an eatery with such a prestigious title. However, it can be quite upsetting when the food falls short of one s expectations, which I have unfortunately experienced with a number of award-winning dining establishments.
But, this promises to be different, located at the rather ‘happening’ Bukit Merah area (and I can imagine a few other websites – the usual suspects, writing about this place soon.)
This café is located at The Mill. Where?
The Mill is a neo-gothic building at Jalan Kilang (kind of near ABC Brickworks Food Centre).
It has been described as an “amalgamation of post-industrial American architectural influences, cast alongside a fortified Gothic tower, and rooted in industrial Singapore.”
A twin-tower that is 45 metres high, dark, alluring, eye-catching, which some may describe as “the Batman building”.
If the gothic design reminds of Parkview Square, that is because they both share the same architect – American James Adam.
