Minorities’ personal laws issues taken up with minister

PESHAWAR: The issues pertaining to the Christian and Hindu personal laws have been taken up with the KP Law Department and assurance received for the remedial measures, said representatives of the minorities communities on Monday.
They said the development came when a group belonging to the religious minorities drawn from different parts of the country met Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Fazal Shakoor Khan at his office here on Friday and requested him for support to redress legal the issues faced by religious minorities.
The members from Christian, Hindu and Sikh communities belonging to KP, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, were part of the delegation, said a press release, adding the minister was flanked by the officials of the KP Law Department.
Need stressed for societal response to sexual violence, abuse of religion

LAHORE, Pakistan: A Zoom Consultation Meeting was organized under the aegis of the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) to call attention to the threatening issue of growing expression of violence in abuse of children and women.
The meeting was attended by human rights activists, researchers, and media personnel virtually.
In the opening remarks, the Executive Director CSJ Peter Jacob said that the growing pattern of violent behavior particularly against the weaker sections of society.
Peter Jacob said that various expressions of violence instill a sense of insecurity and freedoms on one hand and multiply lawlessness on the other.
Conference on Minority Women demands addressing gender and faith-based inequality

LAHORE, Pakistan: The Centre of Social Justice (CSJ) organized a Conference on the “Status of Minority Women and their Rights and Challenges” in Lahore on Tuesday in connection with International Women’s Day 2021.
The themes discussed in the Conference included socio-economic and legal rights of minority women, right to education, right to health, protection against forced conversions, and gender-based violence (GBV).
The Conference was attended by eminent scholars, economists, and legal experts, and they were of the view that millions of Pakistani women from religious minority communities contribute daily in the Country’s economy with some earning prestige in different sectors including health, education, and politics; however, yet their numbers are very low.

There are new calls for the resurrection of the Office of Religious Freedoms, with advocates and opposition politicians saying its closure by the Trudeau Liberals has left Canada without a strong response against targeted abductions, rapes and forced conversions of young Christian and Hindu girls in Pakistan.
Opposition MPs say that the Office of Religious Freedoms created under the previous Conservative government monitored and addressed religious persecution and protected the freedom of religion around the world.
