Australia s first domestic violence shelter for men has opened in Queensland after a $100,000 funding boost. Homeless refuge Sheltered By Grace, based in the south Brisbane suburb of Logan, has added a 12-bedroom wing to house male victims of family violence. The facility already had 24 rooms for men and women who were experiencing homelessness as a result of domestic violence, drug and alcohol dependence, and mental or physical health issues.  The space for male domestic violence victims was funded by a $97,000 grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. $45k on the line as Gympie arts group left in lurch

Premium Content Subscriber only The Gympie arts community is calling on the council to give it some certainty as to the future of its River Rd base, saying it is at risk of having to give back more than $40,000 in funding without it. Creative Arts Gympie Region has been calling the former Quartz Hub building on River Rd, opposite Memorial Park, home since the middle of last year after the two groups merged. Secretary Lesa Campbell said the plan was to turn the building into an arts hub, home to everything from live music to performance. But in November last year they were told by the council their management agreement was not being renewed and they had to leave in December.

Almost $200,000 has been spread around the Burnett region with Bundy Wildlife Rescue, the Bundaberg Bee Keepers Association and the Bundaberg and District Western Performance Horse Club sharing in the funds. Burnett MP Stephen Bennett said the funding would go a very long way for the local groups. “Animals with paws, claws, hoofs, fins, legs, wings, feathers and tails are all big winners in the latest GCBF round,” he said. “Bundy Wildlife Rescue has been in desperate need of funds for some time but with a $15,000 grant coming their way, they’ll now be able to purchase a humidicrib and more vital equipment to help our injured animals get better sooner.
