Destination Queenstown’s new boss says the challenge of rebuilding tourism attracted him to the role.
Paul Abbot, whose last job was running Papua New Guinea airline PNG Air, joined DQ this week after just getting out of Cairns, Australia, before the trans-Tasman bubble burst.
He’s most excited about the challenge of reinventing tourism in a resort hard hit by Covid border closures.
‘‘I guess, to be brutally honest and no disrespect to DQ, if nothing was changing it would not be an interesting job …
‘‘How often do you get the chance to almost reinvent an industry, or to be part of reinventing an industry and shaping it for your children, your grandchildren and the future generations, to give them something that’s better than we have at the moment?

Pinot noir in Martinborough, crayfish in Kaikōura, or whitebait on the West Coast? New Zealand regions love to put on a show to celebrate their local delicacies.
Although 2020 made it difficult to plan and carry out events, the remainder of this year is looking positive for the multitude of food and wine festivals and events planned around the country.
Some are old favourites back up and running, whereas others are brand new, launched to help support local hospitality and tourism economies recover from the pandemic.

Another cash lifeline is being rolled out to
the regions after the approval of funding towards a wide
range of events and activities to stimulate domestic
tourism.
Contracts have now been signed with all nine
regional tourism groupings to enable the $50 million
Regional Events Fund to be distributed around the
country.
“Event organisers and tourism operators
from Northland to Southland will benefit from the events
outlined in the plans from their regional organisations,”
said Tourism Minister Stuart Nash.
