More and more hospitality jobs are opening in the city. But according to city leadership, not enough people are taking advantage of it.“The shift now that we’re seeing is these increased unemployment benefits that people are receiving. Even if they’re available to work and jobs are available, said President of the Tourism Leadership Council Michael Owens. But we’re hearing time and time again from employers and co-workers that people are refusing to come back to work because they know they can get unemployment benefits sitting at home,” Owens added.Owens also admits that fear of returning back to work may also be a factor. Meanwhile, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson is urging businesses and residents to reach out. “One day, the money runs out. And when the money runs out, it’s a mad rush for people. So let’s see what we can do to connect Savannah residents to Savannah businesses,” said Mayor Johnson.
