Salina set to establish fund for cleanup of Former Schilling Air Base

The cleanup of the former Schilling Air Force Base took another step forward after the City of Salina is set to establish a fund to keep a settlement from the federal government sent to the Salina Public Entities (SPEs) of almost $68 million. The Salina City Commission approved, on first reading, an ordinance to establish the Former SAFB Environmental Project Fund during its meeting Monday. The fund, which is a separately budgeted revenue fund, has the purpose of tracking receipts and expenditures of the work to complete the cleanup at the site, now part of the Salina Regional Airport. Mayor Mike Hoppock asked City Manager Mike Schrage about the status of the settlement, noting it had not yet been received the $67.7 million from the government yet. Schrage said there were still a few details to work out before the SPEs receive the funds.
