West Orange resident and TAPinto journalist, Deborah Balthazar, has been named the inaugural New York University (NYU) recipient of the Anne O’Hare McCormick Memorial Fund Scholarship.
Balthazar, 25, graduated cum laude from Caldwell University in 2017. She majored in biology and completed pre-med curriculum, but realized that science journalism is her true calling after receiving a summer fellowship at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.
She has been contributing to TAPinto West Orange for two years and is also a substitute science teacher. Balthazar will begin the program in September and pursue her master s degree in the Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP) at NYU.

Previously, she focused on health and medical research for Quartz, where she was a leading voice during the Covid-19 pandemic, in addition to covering a range of topics including neurodegenerative disease, precision genetic medicine, fertility science and e-cigarettes.
Katherine graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in 2014, and earned her master’s degree in journalism from New York University’s Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program. Outside of work, she co-leads the D.C. chapter of November Project, a free fitness community, and is an ultra-marathoner.
