Houston is bustling with many opportunities to shop, dine, and experience numerous attractions. That can sometimes feel too crowded and overwhelming to enjoy. So escaping the busy city for a day is something locals and visitors alike desire to do. I have made countless road trips to Houston since I was a little girl, but the ones most dear to me were the trips we took as a family at Thanksgiving to visit my great aunt. As much as I loved visiting Houston all those years, I’ve also had many chances to visit nearby small towns that I have returned to time and time again. Here are several small towns bursting with excitement that would make a perfect day trip from Houston.

For the uninitiated, the Round Top Antiques Fair can be a dizzying journey through 20 miles of rural Texas fields beside a two-lane country road, fueled by the promise of hidden treasure around every bend. Located between Austin and Houston, Round Top’s famous flea market began in 1968 and has exploded in popularity in recent years, attracting antique dealers, celebrities, and VIP designers from around the globe for its biannual fall and spring events.

With a vibe both sophisticated and casual, interior designer Jamie Krywicki Wilson’s workplace is a light and airy retreat. Her family’s renovation of a ’70s ranch in Marietta included an addition on the back, providing the space with 15-foot ceilings.
A nod to midcentury
The white-and-brass sconces from Circa Lighting are a favorite of Jamie’s, used throughout her house for their subtle style.
Wall works
Jamie loves to add texture, so rather than displaying two-dimensional art, she hung African necklaces she found at the Round Top Antiques Fair in Texas and a wall hanging made of small shells.
