Engineering consultancy veteran for Arup London-based construction and engineering services firm Arup Group has named Margot Day as its new general counsel. She is taking over from Clare Marshall, who is leaving Arup after 20 years to launch a specialist business consultancy. Day joins Arup after spending much of her career in-house at construction and engineering consultancies, most recently serving as global director of risk, commercial and legal at Buro Happold. She was also UK general counsel for Arcadis and UK legal counsel and company secretary for Hyder Consulting. Her areas of expertise include construction and engineering law, dispute resolution, risk management and contract negotiation.

First Look Media GC joins Ballard Spahr Noted First Amendment attorney Lynn Oberlander, whose CV includes the GC spot at The New Yorker and First Look Media, has begun a role as of counsel in the New York office of Am Law 100 firm Ballard Spahr. Oberlander has joined the firm’s media practice and will provide it with broad media counsel, including general counsel services, newsgathering and newsroom policies, counsel on Freedom of Information Act requests, copyright and content litigation and all types of media-related contract negotiation, drafting and review. She will also become an active member of the firm’s team of defence couns

From Tesla to lidar unicorn Elon Musk’s scepticism about lidar sensors for autonomous vehicles hasn’t stopped his acting GC Alan Prescott from joining Luminar Technologies in Palo Alto. Prescott has become chief legal officer at the Peter Thiel-backed lidar sensor and software unicorn, which went public last December through a SPAC merger. His stint at Tesla lasted just under four years, serving initially as deputy GC and director of regulatory affairs before becoming acting general counsel and corporate secretary.
