Taichung, May 6 (CNA) A driver who fatally struck the mother of a local media personality in an alleged driving under the influence (DUI) accident has been detained and is being held incommunicado, in accordance with a court ruling issued early Thursday.
In a statement, the Taichung District Court said it had granted prosecutors request for the suspect s detention, based on their argument that he may try to flee, collude with others, or destroy evidence, given the severity of the case.
The 30-year-old Taiwanese man, surnamed Fang (方), was arrested at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, after the Mercedes sedan he was driving struck an elderly woman who was jaywalking in Taichung s South District.
