The splintered Italian royal household has long been squabbling over who has the strongest claim to the defunct throne, but now, there is one less man in the running, as Prince Amedeo, Duke of Aosta, has died at the age of 77 on 1 June.
Born on 27 September 1943 at Villa della Cisterna in Florence, Prince Amedeo was the only child of Prince Aimone, 4th Duke of Aosta, and Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark. His early life was spent briefly in an internment camp in Austria, following Italy s defeat in World War II.

Prince Amedeo, Duke of Aosta, who has died aged 77, was, for many years, embroiled in an angry feud over his claim to the non-existent throne of Italy, which had been abolished at the end of the Second World War after a popular referendum in which republicans argued that the Royal Family had been discredited by its links with the Fascist dictatorship of Mussolini.
